I care about the colour you see from across the room and the story you find up close.

I am Marta Mendez, a contemporary artist. I paint mainly in oils, with saturated colour and brushwork that does not hide itself. I started out in watercolour, and I think that is where the attention to light I still look for in every painting comes from.
I move between portraits, animals and landscapes. I am not after a genre, I am after a presence. A face, a body, a place that already meant something before I painted it.
In 2027 I will hold my second exhibition, bringing together a selection of work from recent years.
Path
The beginning
Watercolour
I started out painting in watercolour, learning to work with transparency and with the timing of water.
Vienna
Oils
In Vienna I moved to oils, and with them to loaded brushwork and colour built up in layers.
Estepona
The craft
In Estepona I carried on training, refining the craft I paint with today.
