I am Marta Mendez, a contemporary artist. I paint mainly in oils, with saturated colour and brushwork that does not hide itself. I started out in watercolour, and I think that is where the attention to light I still look for in every painting comes from.

I move between portraits, animals and landscapes. I am not after a genre, I am after a presence. A face, a body, a place that already meant something before I painted it.

Path

  1. The beginning

    Fachhochschule Wien

    I studied oils and painting for six years at the Fachhochschule Wien, under Lena Brauer. That is where the loaded brushwork and the colour built up in layers came from.

  2. Vienna

    Oils

    I continued my training for a further five years in Vienna, with Stefan Nüzel, deepening my work in oils and taking up pastel.

  3. MAQ

    First exhibition

    My first exhibition, at MAQ, where I showed a selection of my work to the public.
